Pullman Filtration876 Precision Basket Review: Is it a gimmick?

VERDICT: HELL NO, NOT A GIMMICK

Espresso taste: clean & sweet

Value for money: elite

Becoming more and more obsessed with home espresso, and falling into the deep money pit and endless rabbit hole that you’re probably in right now, I’ve tried and tested my fair share of precision filter baskets.

To name a few: the classic VST, IMS, Weber Workshops unibasket, Pesado HE% and now more recently the Pullman, I think it’s fair to say I now know my way around these baskets and what to expect from them.

I recently started tinkering with the Pullman due to good feedback I’ve heard, and have so far really enjoyed it.

I got the 22-25g version which is nice and deep for a good sized dose. The basket is solid, has a good hole spread close to the edge, and tapers in with a slightly bowed bottom, meaning you’ll get that classic rat tail looking extraction like the VST & IMS that is so satisfying to watch.

I must admit, my first impressions of the basket, I could tell it didn’t quite have the polished build quality of more expensive baskets, and lacked the clean finish of a VST or uni basket – and rightly so as they are much more expensive.

However, I’ve been blown away with the results. In fact, I did 10 blind taste tests with the Pullman, VST, IMS, Pesado HE% and Weber unibasket, and on taste alone, to my absolute shock – I chose the Pullman 7/10 times.

Not only am I finding tastier shots with the Pullman, the best thing about this basket is its price – surprisingly it is actually one of the cheapest of the baskets mentioned above. You’re looking at around $30AUD plus postage – normally around $40AUD total. True value for money!

If you’re new to coffee, I would definitely recommend a Pullman basket as one of the best bang for buck upgrades you can do with your home set up – as a filter basket alone has the most impact on your espresso.
