Verdict: NOT A GIMMICK

If I could go back in time, would I buy a different grinder? Yes!

3 years on, I feel like I can safely write a reliable and trusted review on this grinder. 

The Baratza 270wi is a grind by weight espresso grinder made to simplify your work flow and save time by removing the need to weigh out your beans. 

If you’re reading this review, you’re probably either very close to buying this grinder, or are deciding between this and another like the Baratza Forte, Eureka Mignon Libra or even the Varia single dose grinder.

I’d also hazard a guess that you’re also aware of everyone complaining about how loud this grinder is. Well, they are right. I ignored all the reviews, and all the negativity about the noise level of the grinder.

I thought “eh who cares how loud it is? I live alone. If it’s a good grinder, why does the noise matter. That’s nothing. I can put up with that”. And I did put up with it for a while, until I couldn’t.

I’m not talking jet engine loud, but for something I really didn’t think would irritate me, the noise really is starting to annoy me. It is freakin loud. Conversationally stopping loud. It does have the potential to wake up the whole house if you’re the first one up for your cup of morning Joe. If I could go back in time, I honestly would pick something quieter.

However, ears aside, this is a great grinder. I’d go as far as saying this is an elite grinder. The best espressos I’ve ever had, have come from this grinder. It creates fluffy, uniform grinds in a fast time. The scale is also ridiculously accurate. You can choose and save 3 different weights/settings, and it will grind exactly to that weight, or at least within .1 to .2 grams. It’s also smart, if it under doses or overdoses 1 time, it adjusts itself to make sure the next shot is correct. You can also pulse, and manually grind as long as you like to pump out a little more if it under doses. It also has a lot of grind settings, 31 macro steps and a lot of micro, making it almost endless.

The only other thing that irritated me about the grinder, is that you had to add a part (that came with it) to grind for espresso. Out of the box, it does not grind fine enough for espresso until the part is added, so that was 1 minor annoyance, why not have the part already added?

Honestly, this is a serious and potential end game grinder. As I said, if I could go back in time, I honestly would be a different grinder. I’m not trying to steer anyone away, but if you really do think the noise will not bother you at all, then be my guest.

TLDR: Serious grinder. Loud AF. Look at alternatives first. Get it if you can put up with a headache.
